Medicine and our medical system are complicated and confusing.

Amiga Medical was inspired by the need for all of us to have a “Doctor Friend”. The person that you can talk to when you aren’t sure you have all the information you need to make a healthcare decision, the person you can call when you don’t understand how your or your loved one’s care is being delivered, the person who can instruct you in what questions you should be asking.

Amiga Medical will listen to your concerns about your current medical situation and then provide guidance and resources to allow you to be the best advocate for your and your loved one’s care. This may be in the form of navigation advice, education, or some tips about communicating with the primary medical team. Here is how the process works:

Overview

Fill out a quick information form that highlights your needs and concerns.

This will include 

  • your name
  • patient name and age
  • a brief description of the situation and what the concerns are
  • consent

Follow Up

We will contact you as soon as possible to let you know that you have been heard.

Expect an initial follow up email within 48 hours where you can expect:

  • An answer to your questions via email if  it is appropriate for this form of communication
  • A link to schedule an appointment so we can address your concerns together
  • A request for additional information, including possibly sending medical records so I can be fully prepared when we meet

If we cannot help, we will do our best to refer you to the best place to answer your questions or concerns.

Amiga Medical is not a treating provider and as such cannot diagnose illness, prescribe medication, or give a second opinion.

About Dr. Amy Espinosa

Hello! I spent over a decade as a hospitalist in the Boulder, CO area. As a hospitalist I cared for patients with complicated issues requiring hospitalization. While working in the hospital, I learned a lot about how our healthcare system works (and how it doesn’t work!). I saw the frustrating gaps in care and confusing decisions that patients are faced with. I left hospital based medicine to work for the healthcare start-up Grand Rounds, now Included Health. Grand Rounds provided a unique combination of healthcare navigation and tele-health. After leaving Grand Rounds I was the co-founder of Origin Healthcare, a company that provides hospital level services at home to patients in Northern Colorado.

In 2022 I decided to take a sabbatical. It was during this time that an increasing number of my friends and family were coming to me with questions about their, and their loved ones’ medical care or conditions. It became clear to me that there was a need for everyone to have “a doctor friend”, someone that they could look to for advice on healthcare navigation, for education, and for help in communicating with their, or their loved ones’, medical team. Amiga Medical was born from my desire to be everyone’s “doctor friend”.

Can you just email me the information I need?

Occasionally questions are such that email is a preferred communication platform, however given the complexity of our medical system and the likelihood of additional questions, Amiga prefers for most communication to be via phone call or video.

Who will be answering my questions?
At this time, Dr. Amy Espinosa is the sole provider at Amiga Health and you will be speaking with her directly.
Will Amiga Medical send notes or talk to my doctors?
No. Amiga Medical is not meant to be an intermediary or liaison, but rather to give people the confidence and information to advocate for themselves or others.
How much does a consultation with Amiga Medical cost?

Currently, Dr. Espinosa provides this service voluntarily. Our current medical system does not provide equal care to all, and often those that are in most need of our services cannot afford additional medical expenses.

However, if you would like to offer a cash gift, it will be gratefully accepted. How much you give is an individual decision based on the complexity of your question(s), the service provided to you, and your own financial situation. For reference, an average 15-20 minute doctor visit in the United States costs around $170.
